The Water, Gas and Light Commission
is Working for You
The City of Albany, Georgia Water Works was established in 1892, followed by the The Albany Electric Plant, founded in 1900. In 1912, The Water, Gas and Electric Commission was created to serve the citizens in Albany and Dougherty County.
There are fewer than 2,000 public utilities across the country that provide all three services to their citizens. WG&L also bills for the city's sewer and garbage for our customers' convenience.
The Water, Gas and Light Commission has grown to become the largest public utility in the largest state east of the Mississippi! We serve 39,000 customers and maintain 99,000 meters. We do all this with 271 employees. WG&L has over 395 miles of gas mains and 537 miles of water lines. Thirty-two active wells pump crystal clear water from deep underground aquifer systems to our customers' homes and businesses. Our abundant and pure water is the reason several major industries have moved their operations to Albany.
If you are lucky enough to be served by the WG&L system, then you are lucky enough!
