Water is Wonderful!
Water is all around us. It is colorless, odorless and tasteless. Nearly 80% of the surface of the earth is water. We use water in so many ways that we take it for granted. Only 1% of all the water on earth is freshwater for us to use. It should be enough to meet our needs if we take care of it. This means we must be careful to use water properly and keep natural sources clean. In south Georgia, we are blessed with water flowing from an underground river system that is called an artesian water system.
FACT: Today, the amount of water on earth remains exactly the same as it was billions of years ago, no more, no less!
The Water Cycle

Water moves in a never ending natural cycle...so the water you are using may have been a drink for some dinosaur!

The human body is made up of about 70% water. Every system in our body needs water. Human beings can live 3 weeks without food but only 3 days without water. Next to the air we breathe, water is our most important need! All living things need water.
FACT:Water is present on earth in three forms: Solid, Liquid and Gas (Vapor). Water vapor is present in the air at all temperatures. It is the only element that has 3 distinct forms.
Water, Gas and Light pumps water from deep underground rivers and as it bubbles up to the surface it is 99.9% pure. WG&L adds chorline to prevent any bacteria from entering water pipe joints. The Federal Government requires that floride is added to prevent cavities in teeth. To insure that everyone has water when they turn on their faucet, the pumped water is stored in 10 above ground tanks. These tanks are located in all parts of our community. The reason that water towers are so tall is to allow gravity to push water through the pipes to our homes.
Here Are Some Hints for Wise Water Use!
- Check every faucet and toilet for leaks. Even a slow drip can waste a lot of water each day.
- Take less than 5 minute showers. This uses less water than a bath.
- Turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth or scraping the dishes or washing your hands.
- Don't use the toilet to flush away tissues, gum wrappers or any other small scraps. It is not a TRASH can!
- Be careful to water the lawn, not the sidewalk or street.
- Fill the dishwasher and clothes washer with soiled dishes and clothes. Washing partial loads can waste electricity, water and money.
- Never use a hose to clean off the driveway. A broom is better.
- Use a bucket of water to wash your bike and a hose to rinse it.
- Keep a jug of drinking water in the refrigerator. You can always have cold water without running the faucet.
- Turn off drinking fountains and sinks in public places.
Use water only when you need it. Always turn it off when you are finished.
