Electricity is a very safe source of energy as long as it is used properly and with certain precautions in mind. Here are just a few safety tips to remember:
- Keep all objects (ladders, kites, antennas, etc) away from power lines. Consider all electrical lines and equipment dangerous.
- Never touch a power line. If one has fallen do not attempt to move it and call WG&L immediately.
- During an thunder storm, don't use appliances or telephones; don't take a bath or shower; and use surge protectors on electronic devices and appliances.
- Don't use appliances or fixtures designed for indoor use outside.
- Remember that water and electricity are a deadly combination.
- Teach children not to play with plugs and outlets. Install safety covers on any unused outlets.
- Make sure all electrical cords and extension cords are in good condition.
Call Before You Dig
Electric power lines and other utility services could be within a few feet of the surface. For homeowners, digging in your yard poses some risk. A damaged electric line or service to a house can create a hazard that potentially endangers both persons and property. These underground facilities are not always located out in the street. So whether you are grading, installing sprinklers, or planting a tree, WG&L would encourage you to call 1-800-282-7411 before you dig.
