Proudly Providing Power Since 1901

In 1900, Albany Water Works purchased a privately owned electric plant then operating in the city.  This purchase formed Electric Light Works and Water Works.  Water Gas and Light has grown from servicing 2,562 customers in Dec 1932 to over 39,000 customers today.

To provide low electric costs WG&L formed MEAG (Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia) in 1975.  MEAG is a public corporation and created by an Act of the 1975 Georgia General Assembly.  WG&L receives an allocation of hydroelectric power through SEPA (Southeastern Power Administration) and the remaining demand is supplied by MEAG through Georgia's Integrated Transmission System.  WG&L has grown from a single electric plant to 11 substations and over 600 miles of power lines.
