Gas Service Since 1912
The Water Gas & Light Commission has supplied gas to the community since 1912. In response to a popular and insistent demand from Albany citizens, a plant was built to manufacture gas from coal. The plant has been demolished, but is shown here from a 1950 photo.
In 1955, manufactured gas was replaced with natural gas, a much cleaner alternative. Natural gas is a safe and dependable source of energy when certain safety measures are followed.
Since 1932 WG&L's gas customer base has grown from 1,389 customers to serving over 27,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers. Our Gas Department will continue to meet the needs of our natural gas customers.
